Why is Peru a country of unique flowers?
Peru has one of the highest levels of biodiversity on the planet — and that includes its flora. The combination of three completely different regions (Amazon, Andes, and Coast) creates a floral ecosystem unlike anything else in the world: over 3,500 orchid species, high-altitude flowers that grow nowhere else, and lush tropical flora in the jungle. Peru is, in this sense, a botanically extraordinary country.
The national flower of Peru is the cantuta — a tubular flower in colors ranging from red to yellow to purple. It was sacred to the Incas and today remains a symbol of Andean identity. It's not sold in ordinary florists, but its presence in ceremonies and festivals is constant.
What flowers are given in Peru?
In the local market, roses lead for romantic occasions and birthdays. Carnations are very present in everyday arrangements due to their affordable price and durability. Lilies and tropical flowers — heliconias, anthuriums, birds of paradise — are gaining ground for special events and corporate gifts. For Day of the Dead, chrysanthemums and white flowers are the traditional choice.
A Peruvian custom: arrangements tend to be larger than expected — giving "too little" can come across as indifference. The gesture matters, but so does the size.
When are flowers given in Peru?
Mother's Day — second Sunday of May — is the most important floral date of the year. Peruvian mothers receive flowers, chocolates and gifts; sending from abroad is a very well-received gesture.
Valentine's Day (February 14) is the second biggest date for flower sales, especially in Lima.
Inti Raymi (June 24) — the Sun Festival, one of the most important Andean celebrations — includes floral offerings as part of the ritual. It is not a date for personal gifts, but flowers are central to the public ceremonies.
Day of the Dead (November 1 and 2) is an important date when cemeteries fill with flowers, especially white chrysanthemums and wreaths. Christmas and birthdays round out the annual calendar.

A fact you didn't know
At Lima's flower market — the Mercado de Productores de Santa Anita — over 2 million flowers change hands every week. It's one of the most active in South America, bringing together producers from the highlands, the jungle, and the coast all in one place. What strikes visitors most is not just the variety but the colors: Peru has a floral palette that few cities in the world can match.
